The Business:
Self Awareness Limited is a young consulting company with roots in commercial coaching and working and learning styles in schools and 6th form colleges; they are based in Shirley, Derbyshire and were established in 2003. The managing director, Colin Stoker, previously worked for one the worlds leading psychometric test houses.
Self Awareness work with their uniquely researched assessment tool the 'Footprint Form' which is a  psychometric instrument that is based on 4 quadrant behaviour per Marston Theory from the 1920’s.

The system addresses the gap between teaching managers the hard skills and theoretical competences that are required in the world of work and the emotional intelligence to deliver the knowlege successfully. What is clear is that the workplace requires people who are also emotionally comfortable and competent in dealing with others, and that attitude is the main employable factor.

Increasingly organizations are measuring and selecting staff who are more in tune with their own communication style and values; this is what the Instant Rapport Builder (IRB) system will deliver for managers and coaches - more awareness of their own strengths and values.
The system is innovative because it allows two people who will be working together and interacting closely to understand each other’s behaviours and therefore their working and learning style. Within the coaching context it will be for coaches and their clients. It is taking existing thinking about behavioural assessment processes to a far higher and more functional and practical level.
The technological advance of the ‘IRB’ system is its ability to assess the style gaps across a broad range of individuals.
Assessments have historically been created on paper with electronic data capture a relatively new process. Behavioural assessments have predominantly been used in business for specific uses, such as, recruitment, appraisal and team building. The delivery of such a process has always required the ‘expert knowledge’ of a trained person, as the end user, to ‘interpret’ the context of the reports.
The reports are delivered so that they require little or no ‘interpretation’. The ‘IRB’ system will deliver extremely accurate information about how two people can improve their interaction in a coaching relationship, in real-time. It allows coaches to mentally flex their delivery to each client by being able to access his or her information on the system.
The benefit to the coach is that it allows him to tailor an individual program to that client. This has the advantage that coaches can alter their existing strategies without necessarily having to alter ‘what they coach’ but rather ‘how' they coach each client.
The benefits to the client are that they and the coach will understand ‘why they approach their work in their own particular way’ and be able to communicate this more effectively.
The end results are more rewarding relationships working in closer co-operation to raise the standard of coaching in a business or life context.

History of business development
Self Awareness started trading in early 2004. In the first year the company turned over £38,000, £77,000 in the second and £98,000 in the third. Profit has been reinvested in the business to develop the product and the market awareness.
Historically Self Awareness used a manual system and accessed a suite of reports they had developed themselves. This prompted the development of their own online 'IRB' system that will be completed in July 2007.

Self Awareness has pulled together a team to develop the product. The Business Advice Team Ltd are technical integrators and generated the first pc based algorithm for Self Awareness. Xibis Limited are expert database builders and web integrators who take the algorithm and IRB reports and web enable them. Carlos Dominguez works for Self Awareness as a consultant in the development of the IRB system and Derby University School of Psychology are verifying the outputs.
Colin Stoker’s in-depth knowledge of psychometric testing and report writing is the keystone to the success of the technology development.

The business now has a client base of some 50 private schools and six form colleges and a network of business leaders and government suppliers for strategic coaching These come back year on year to help their coaches and teachers perform.
